Manipur Congress accuses Centre & Manipur govt in tackling encroachment from Myanmar

Imphal: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) accused the BJP governments both at the centre and in Manipur of not being able to protect Manipur’s land from being encroached by Myanmar.

Responding to queries from reporters on the sideline of a function held at Imphal Congress Bhavan, MPCC president, K Meghachandra said that as the BJP government is unable to check the encroachment along the Manipur sector of the Indo-Myanmar border, the Congress will do the needful to prevent the encroachment.

K Meghachandra said that the work for fencing the Indo-Myanmar border was sanctioned by the then Congress government at the centre following a proposal from the then Congress government in the state. However, when there were allegations of leaving a large chunk of Manipur state land on Myanmar side, the then Congress government raised the issue with the central government.

According to the MPCC president, the then Manipur government had also raised the issue of alleged shifting of international border pillars towards the state side from the original site. After raising the issue, the centre sent officials of the concerned ministry to conduct spot surveys, he added. Following the developments, the centre halted the border fencing work. The centre had also taken up to conduct the survey regarding the change of locations of certain border pillars, Meghachandra further added.

After the BJP came to power at the centre as well as in the state, civil society organisations have been pressing the government to resolve the border dispute. Both the governments at the centre and in the state also gave assurances. But no work was initiated to settle the dispute, the MPCC president alleged.
