Imphal: Congress in Manipur on Saturday staged a protest in front of the party office in Imphal against an alleged attempt to torch the party office on Friday night.

On Friday night, around 10 pm, miscreants set fire at the gate of the Congress Bhavan in Imphal located in the heart of the state capital, Congress workers alleged. A City police team who rushed to the spot on being informed by the security personnel guarding the Congress office recovered a bottle containing petrol nearby, they further alleged.

The incident was bid to set afire the Congress office and the party took the matter seriously, said Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) spokesperson Ningombam Bupenda Meitei.

He alleged that it was a part of attempts to abolish the opposition parties including the Congress which are taking the main role in safeguarding the sanctity of democracy.

“The state government should not take the matter lightly. The miscreants involved in the attempt to set afire the party office should be booked with 24 hours”, the Congress spokesperson also said.

He also drew the attention of chief minister N Biren Singh who is also holding the Home portfolio in taking up immediate actions to prevent repetition of such an unfortunate incident.

Meanwhile, a large number of Congress members and workers including leaders of the MPCC took part in a sit-in-protest today in front of the Congress Bhavan, denouncing the alleged attempt to set afire the party office.

During the protest, various placards with slogans decrying the alleged attempt to set afire the Congress office and demanding booking of the culprits were displayed.

“Democracy is under threat”, one of the placards read.

The protest also registered a strong denouncement over the alleged attempt to arrest president Ningthoujam Popilal of Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) by the police after registering an FIR against him.

The FIR against Popilal is reportedly related with the physical assault of the two Manipur unit BJYM leaders by four armed miscreants on the night of February 9.

The protesters said that the charges leveled against MPYCC president were unfounded and the police should immediately stop searching for him. The FIR against him should be returned.
