Manipur Violence: SC Extends Tenure of Justice Gita Mittal Committee Till July 2026

UKHRUL: The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended the tenure of Justice Gita Mittal Committee, which oversees relief and rehabilitation efforts related to Manipur violence, until July 31, 2026.

Led by former High Court Chief Justice Gita Mittal, the committee was established on August 7, 2023, in response to gender-based violence arising from the ethnic conflict in Manipur. The committee was tasked to monitor the relief and rehabilitation for those people affected by the violence.

Apart from this, the Justice Mittal-led committee was also entrusted with the payment of compensation and restitution to victims.

The committee comprises Justice Shalini Phansalkar Joshi, a retired Bombay High Court judge, and Justice Asha Menon, a former Delhi High Court judge, alongside its chairperson Justice Gita Mittal.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant confirmed that this all-women committee will continue its work until July 31, 2026. 

“Continuation of the Committee from July 2025 is regularised. The Committee is granted further time till 31st July 2026,” the CJI Kant-led Bench ordered.

The apex court announced that, so far, the committee has submitted 42 reports addressing the relief and rehabilitation of victims of the Manipur violence.
