Cyclone Remal wrecks havoc in Ukhrul and Kamjong

Ukhrul: The cyclone Remal has impeded innumerable damages on houses and properties causing significant disruption to human existence. Torrential downpour of rain destroyed paddy fields, fishery ponds, uprooted electric poles and block road connectivity, causing havoc in various parts of the state.

A house belonging to Nganaomi Jajo at Raikan Tang, Ukhrul was washed away by a mud-slide on 28 May 2024 at around 2:30pm. His family of 5 are presently seeking shelter at a neighbour’s house.

In another incident, two fishery ponds belonging to Yangpen Yangya of Phungcham village were completely washed away by the rain along with all the fish that he has been rearing in the two ponds.

Hundreds of paddy fields along the Rangatak River and Challou River were submerged by the rising level of water river yesterday. Rangatak Kong is the longest river flowing in the northern part of Ukhrul District. Originating from Phungcham, it runs towards Chingjaroi -Jessami and finally meets the mighty Challou River at Akash Bridge for onward journey to Chindwin River.

The heavy downpour of rain has also destroyed many terrace fields in different parts of Ukhrul District. Electric poles were uprooted in many places. Inspite of the limited man power, the MSPDCL Ukhrul Division is working round the clock to restore the damage. NHIDCL is employing machineries at various places to clear the landslides.
