Ukhrul: The World Meetei Council (WMC) in a letter submitted to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi on Monday titled, “Manipur Deserves a Responsible Government” expressed, in what it described as “grave concerns regarding the ongoing situation in Manipur,
which has persisted for the last 17 months.”
In the letter to the Prime Minister, the WMC listed ten observations:

1. The people of Manipur are in a state of utter confusion and distress due to the prevailing circumstances.
2. To date, neither the Hon’ble Chief Minister nor anyone else has taken responsibility for the chaos that has plagued our state.
3. In a democratic framework, accountability lies with the head of the government for the outcomes of their leadership.
4. A failure to govern effectively should prompt a resignation to allow for a new government under a new leadership.
5. Unfortunately, the ongoing violence appears to be tacitly permitted by the central government for reasons that are evident to those who can think critically.
6. We recognize that central agencies possess the knowledge to understand the causes of this unrest and have the capacity to address it.
7. The presence of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, which number around 60,000, seems ineffective as they keep watching while SoO (Suspension of Operation) groups of Chin-Kukis assault Meetei villages. This undermines the reputation of the Indian Army not only in Manipur but globally, harming our national interest.

8. We believe that the Army has the capability to swiftly intervene and halt attacks on Meetei villages, but lacks the necessary orders to do so, resulting in continued violence.
9. It is apparent that the state government has failed to communicate critical information to the central government, inhibiting a coordinated response to restore peace.
10. The people of Manipur have suffered immensely due to the abject inefficiency of the current chief minister. People have become refugees in their own homeland. Do they not deserve a government that is accountable and responsible?
Urging the Prime Minister to consider the urgent need for a capable and accountable government in Manipur, WMC called for the replacement of the current chief minister, who it said, has shown an inability to restore normalcy even after 17 months.
“We hope that with a new leader, peace and normalcy can return to Manipur,” added the World Meetei Council.
