Manipur: District administrations request assistance from central security forces

Imphal: District administrations in violence-hit districts of Manipur on Thursday requested central security forces to assist the police in maintenance of law and order in their respective districts.

While requesting the central security forces, the district administrations, in their orders, quoted information from the district SPs expressing serious breach of law and order in their respective districts and stated that there is apprehension of serious security threat to the life and property of citizens.

The situation has gone beyond the control of the district administration and district police and assistance from the central forces is necessary.

District administrations of Imphal West, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Tengnoupal, Churachandpur and Kangpokpi have issued orders requesting the central forces for maintenance of law and order.

They also stated that prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC against the assembly of five or more persons and carrying of arms were already enforced in their respective districts and relaxed from time to time.

In the order requesting the central forces, Imphal West district administration sought the requisition of the services of Assam Rifles in two specific areas – Khongnag Ani Karak to Lilashing Khongnangkhong up to North AOC, and Krishna Premi Oil Pump to Secretariat up to Singjamei Chinga Crossing.

This deployment is scheduled from 9 am of February 29 till March 5 to assist civil authorities in maintaining peace and restoring confidence among the residents of the district.

For Bishnupur district, authorities have requested one column of 5/9 GR under HQ, 9 Sector IGAR (S) to assist the district police at Nambol police gate from February 29 until the conclusion of the Assembly session.

The Thoubal district administration, in a letter to the Inspector General of Assam Rifles, South and the DIG, 9 sector Assam Rifles requested deployment of armed forces in sensitive areas of the district.

It added the SP of the district will provide the list of sensitive areas in the district.

Similarly, the Churachandpur district has called for the requisition of Assam Rifles in Churachandpur town and adjoining areas to support civil authorities in maintaining peace.

The Kangpokpi district administration ordered the requisition of the Assam Rifles in the district with immediate effect to assist the civil authority in order to maintain peace and tranquility and to bring a sense of security and confidence among the people of the district.
