Imphal: A farmers’ body in Manipur has demanded a comprehensive policy to ensure timely availability of urea (fertilizer) to the peasants of the state.

While demanding the comprehensive policy, the All Manipur Progressive Farmers’ Association (AMPFA), in a statement, demanded a discussion on the non-availability of urea fertilizer in the state in the ensuing monsoon session of the state Assembly.

AMPFA stated that the peasants of the state have been facing the non-availability of urea during the peak season of paddy crops in the last few years.

“Making the urea available to the farmers is very important for higher production of rice, and as such, MLAs who are the representatives of the people should take the matter seriously,” the association also said.

The issue should be taken up for discussion in the ensuing monsoon session of the state Assembly, due to commence from July 25, the AMPFA added.

It observed that contrary to the ever decreasing area of paddy fields, the demand for urea is increasing with every passing year in the state while stressing the need for a fresh survey to find the actual area under paddy cultivation in the state.
