Manipur Govt likely to lift internet ban on trial basis in violence unaffected areas

Imphal: The Manipur government is likely to lift the ban on mobile internet services on trial basis in those districts which are not affected by the current violence conflict.

The state government will go for opening of mobile towers on trial basis in those district headquarters which had not been affected by violence due to the current law and order crisis in the state, an order of the Home department said today.

If the same is found feasible, it shall be replicated to other areas where the law and order situation has improved, it added.

To note here, in protest against the suspension of the internet services, All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM) has been imposing economic blockade on the national highways starting from November 3 evening.

Owing to the blockade, hundreds of Imphal-bound loaded trucks were reportedly stranded at various places along NH-2 and NH-37.

Meanwhile, today’s order issued by the Home commissioner of Manipur government extended the ban on internet service for another three days, that is, till November 8.

The order stated that the suspension/curbing of mobile internet/data services, internet/data services through VPN in the territorial jurisdiction of the Manipur for another three days with immediate effect from the time this suspension order becomes operational till November 8 as preventive measure in public.

The order observed that there are high chances that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the state of Manipur.

The state government had effectively imposed services through VPN in the territorial suspension/curbing of mobile internet/data services, internet/data of jurisdiction of the state of Manipur as preventive measure after the outbreak of ethnic clash between two communities on May 3 last.
