Manipur: Man held with 1,000 kg smuggled poppy seeds worth Rs 12 lakhs

Around 1000 kg of poppy seeds worth around Rs 12 lakh in the local market were seized by police in Manipur who also arrested the alleged smuggler of the item.

State police PRO said that the smuggled item was seized during a raid at a godown at Mantripukhri of Imphal where a team of Imphal East district police raided based on specific information on Sunday.

The godown where the seeds were found belongs to one  Surjeet Kumar Yadav  from Bihar who is presently residing in Imphal’s Paona Bazar. 

He has been arrested and handed over to the anti-smuggling unit of Imphal custom division along with the seized item for taking necessary action, the PRO said.

The raid was conducted under the supervision of its Additional Superintendent of Police (Operation) Roni Mayengbam on Sunday around 11.20 am and recovered 18 bags (13 plastic bags white in colour and five jute bags) inside the godown.

Suspected poppy seeds were found in the 18 bags. It weighed around 999.5 kilogram (including bags) together. 
The value of seized articles was around Rs 12 lakhs in local market, the police said.
