UKHRUL: At least 20 houses belonging to the Tangkhul Naga community in Litan village township under Ukhrul district were gutted after being set ablaze by Kuki miscreants, with video footage clearly showing their involvement. The exact number of houses set ablaze could not be independently verified by Ukhrul Times at the time of filing this report. Sources said the actual number could be much higher.

On Sunday, curfew was imposed in the village after clashes broke out between Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities.

The Office of the District Magistrate, Ukhrul, imposed prohibitory orders restricting movement and activities in Litan village with effect from 7 pm on Sunday until further orders.

According to the order, the restrictions were imposed in view of an apprehension of a possible breach of peace and tranquillity between two communities—Tangkhul and Kuki.

To maintain law and order and to restore overall security in the area, the District Magistrate has reportedly requisitioned additional security forces, including four columns of Assam Rifles, two additional companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), four columns of the 8 Bihar Regiment, and personnel from the 4th Mahar Regiment.

As per reports, the order followed an altercation that allegedly took place on Saturday evening around 8:30 pm at Litan Sareikhong, involving intoxicated individuals from both the Tangkhul and Kuki communities. It is alleged that a Tangkhul Naga individual, identified as Sterling, switched on his torch after hearing voices nearby. The group, reportedly belonging to the Kuki community, allegedly assaulted him, claiming that the torchlight was directed at their faces.

Sterling reportedly sustained serious injuries and was later shifted to a hospital in Imphal for medical treatment.

Following the incident, villagers from Sharkaphung village allegedly demanded that the chief of Litan Sareikhong hand over those involved in the assault. Meanwhile, a statement issued by Litan Sareikhong stated that the matter was intended to be resolved through customary practices, with a meeting scheduled on Sunday. The statement further claimed that the family of the injured person did not attend the meeting.

The Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) also issued a statement stating that the matter had allegedly been resolved peacefully and through customary mechanisms by the village authority of Litan Sareikhong, in consultation with the injured person’s family.

However, the Katho Katamnao Long (KKL) has categorically rejected the KSO’s statement, asserting that no concrete steps were taken to resolve or rectify the situation. KKL has reportedly directed the KSO to withdraw what it termed an incorrect and misleading statement, maintaining that misinformation should not be used under the pretext of de-escalation.

As per reports, after the demands of Sharkaphung villagers were allegedly not met, some individuals are said to have attacked the residence of the chief of Litan Sareikhong and the house of the person allegedly involved in the initial scuffle.

The situation reportedly escalated further as members of both communities clashed, and tensions are said to remain high at present. Both the Katho Katamnao Long and the Kuki Students’ Organisation have called for peace and restraint.
