Mongkot Chepu Incident Resolved: Victims to Receive Rs. 5 Lakh Compensation

Ukhrul, June 28: An undertaking was officially signed on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at Litan Police Station between representatives of the Tangkhul civil society and the Kuki village chiefs of the Litan area, following a brutal assault incident at Mongkot Chepu on June 26.

The incident, which occurred around 7:30 PM on Thursday, involved the violent attack on a Ukhrul-bound passenger winger vehicle. The driver and passengers were reportedly assaulted, and the vehicle was damaged. The episode sparked widespread condemnation and alarm over safety on the Imphal-Ukhrul road.

Per the undertaking made available to Ukhrul Times, it said that in the presence of Tangkhul community leaders representing the victim party, Kuki village chiefs, representing the accused, acknowledged and condemned the assault. The chiefs resolved to take collective responsibility and ensure such acts do not recur.

The accused in the assault were named as L. Lunminjoy, s/o L. Ngamjang, B. Ngamminlun, s/o L. Lhunsel, L. Lunhao, s/o L. Ngamal. The three condemned for their “barbaric inhuman act” that disrupted peace and endangered public safety.

    To maintain peace and ensure the safety of travelers along the Imphal-Ukhrul route, the parties agreed to the following:

    1. No Repetition of Violence: Any future incidents of harassment or violence from Mongkot Chepu jurisdiction will be dealt with strictly, with no scope for negotiation or compromise.
    2. Cultural Adherence: The Chief of Mongkot Chepu agreed to uphold and honour the customs and traditions of the Tangkhul Naga landowners.
    3. Census Submission: Mongkot Chepu must submit details of its household and village census to TNL (Tangkhul Naga Long) within 48 hours.
    4. Compensation: A monetary compensation of Rs. 5,00,000 (five lakh rupees) is to be paid by July 1, 2025, to the victims’ side.

    The undertaking was signed by representatives of Tangkhul CSOs and Kuki village chiefs, including:
