A team of police commandos attached with Imphal West district police arrested Gurumayum Birchandra alias Molecule today from Imphal’s Thangmeiband Kabrabam Leikai, who has been absconding since 21 November after allegedly killing his nephew.
The 71-year-old person who had contested Manipur Assembly elections on many occasions was at large after he allegedly killed his nephew Gurumayum Suraj Sharma (35), the only son of his elder brother at Singjamei Chingamathak Ngakraba Leirak on November 21 morning.
The police commando team reportedly intercepted the accused while he was walking alone on the road on Tuesday morning, around 8.45 am. A license gun (double bore gun) he allegedly used in killing his nephew was also recovered from his possession, a police source said.
Police quoting the statement of the alleged murderer said that, after shooting to kill his nephew, ‘Molecule’ abandoned the ambulance which he used for escape at a place in Imphal and proceeded to another place on a hired auto-rickshaw. He then reportedly halted a night at Imphal War Cemetery. He stayed the next night at a space between two shops at Chingmeirong, Imphal, the police further said.
Meanwhile, the police commando team handed the murder accused to the Singjamei police station where a murder case has been registered against him.

On the other hand, the joint action committee formed in connection with the killing incident has decided to take back the body of the deceased lying at RIMS morgue for performing the last rites.
The lifeless body of Suraj has been lying at RIMS morgue after the family backed by the JAC refused to accept the body, demanding the arrest of the accused.
“We have decided to take back the body and perform the last rites as police have arrested the accused,” JAC advisor S Sharat Sharma told reporters.
The JAC advisor then thanked the police and all those who extended cooperation in arresting the murder accused and demanded befitting punishment to the alleged accused as per law.
