Manipur Police seize 160 kg of sandalwood, 2.228 kg of heroin, 3 held

Imphal: Police in Manipur’s Bishnupur district arrested an alleged sandalwood smuggler and recovered 160 kg of sandalwood from him on Thursday.

A team of Bishnupur district police commandos intercepted the sandalwood during a check to A-star car near an oil pump at Ngangkha Lawai along Tidim road Thursday morning, around 8.30 am, police said. The sandalwood was found in four boxes.

According to police, the arrested alleged sandalwood smuggler was identified as Husain Ahmed (31) of Bishnupur district.

The arrested person has been handed over to officials of the Forest department in Bishnupur district along with the recovered for necessary legal action, the police added.

In another event, a team of Imphal East police commandos confiscated 2.228 kg of heroin powder which was found during a check to a truck at Khabam Lamkhai along NH-2 Thursday night. Following the recovery of the contraband drugs, the police arrested the driver of the truck identified as Abhinas and his handyman Sagar, according to police.

The police said that the contraband drugs were found concealed in one of the spare tyres of the truck. They were handed over to Heingang police station along with the recovered drugs, the police added.
