Imphal, September 2: Manipur is abuzz with speculations and anticipation as the state prepares for a high-profile visit widely believed to be Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first trip since ethnic clashes broke out on May 3, 2023.

On August 30, the Chief Secretary-led officials convened at the state secretariat in Imphal to iron out arrangements for what they called the “VVIP” September visit. Sources confirmed that Kangla in Imphal and Peace Ground in Churachandpur have been shortlisted as the main venues, with security, infrastructure, and crowd management topping the agenda. The Special Protection Group (SPG) is already in close coordination with the Manipur Police, reinforcing speculation that the Prime Minister himself will be the guest.

Preparations extend beyond security drills. Roads leading to the venues are being blacktopped, medical teams readied, and seating arranged for more than 24,000 people across the two sites. Beautification drives have also been ordered to project a welcoming image.

The reportedly proposed visit carries heavy political weight. Civil society groups and opposition parties have long accused Modi of remaining silent on Manipur’s unrest, describing his absence as negligence. His arrival, if confirmed, will mark a turning point not only in the state’s troubled politics but also in the Centre’s engagement with the crisis.

Amid the buzz, political manoeuvres are underway in Imphal. Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata’s recent meeting with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has sparked talk of a new government taking shape by the end of September, ending months of President’s Rule that followed the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in February.

While the schedule remains officially unannounced, officials say the sheer scale of preparations points towards a landmark visit by the “VVIP” in the coming weeks.
