Manipur: Special teams formed to monitor illegal migrants influx

Imphal: The Manipur government has special teams comprising civil and police nodal officers to check and monitor the influx of illegal migrants in five districts of the state sharing borders with Myanmar.

The teams will work under a new committee constituted by the state government with Commissioner Dr Shailesh Kumar Chourasia of the state government as chairman and IGP Kabib K as convener for verification of illegal migrants to capture their biometrics.

The committee and the special teams to be worked under the committee were constituted by two different orders issued by the state home department on May 11.

The additional step has been taken given the increasing influx of illegal Myanmar migrants in the state, an official source said.

The order constituting the committee stated that it has been reported that there are new settlements in many areas bordering Myanmar such as Behiang of Churachandpur district, Sajik Tampak and Molcham of Chandel district and other parts of the state, due to the porous Indo-Myanmar border.

It is felt necessary to make similar arrangements for the illegal migrants at these places having new settlements as it has been done in Kamjong district, the order stated.

As requested by the Home Department, the committee constituted a special team led by IGP Kabib K along with DIG (intelligence) and district police officers to identify the new settlements, capture their photographs and videos and capture biometrics of all the illegal migrants detected.

The special team comprising civil and police nodal officers will also identify new settlements, undertake biometrics etc. of illegal migrations detected in five districts- Ukhrul, Kamjong, Tengnoupal, Chandel and Churachandpur sharing borders with Myanmar.

The team will also keep vigil on the influx of illegal migrants, identify any new settlements capture biometrics to upload on the MHA portal and submit weekly reports to the government along with photographs and videos.

The deputy commissioners and superintendents of police of the five districts will provide necessary assistance to the nodal officers in terms of manpower and logistics for the proper discharge of their duties, the order stated.
