IMPHAL, Sep 22: The Manipur State Museum has reached an appreciable milestone, completing 55 years of its existence on Monday, September 23.
Inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on September 23, 1969, the museum has experienced the test of time, showcasing the rich history and culture of Manipur.
Located in the heart of Imphal, the museum has been a testament to the state’s heritage, housing rare artifacts and relics that highlight its historical facts and accounts, from early to modern times.

The museum also illustrates the harmonious coexistence of different communities in the state, with various relics and antiquities related to their cultures and traditions on display.
Despite facing challenges in the last few years, including slight decline in public attention due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing problems in the state, the museum authority has been trying to revitalize the museum.
Curator Mrinashree Mairembam said that efforts are underway to upgrade the museum, with a proposal sent to the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, to add two new cutting-edge galleries – the Royal Gallery and the Traditional Textiles Gallery.
“These galleries will feature rare objects and articles from royal families and ethnic communities of the state, utilizing modern technologies like 3D effects and sensory lighting”, she added.
The museum currently boasts eight indoor and outdoor galleries, including Archaeological Gallery, Jalan’s Gallery, Art Gallery, Ethnological Gallery, Musical Instrument Gallery and Hiyang Hiren.

Mairembam expressed hope that upgrading the museum will attract visitors from across the country, boosting the state’s economy besides facilitating cultural exchange.
She went on to emphasize the importance of redefining museums beyond entertainment while highlighting their significance in educating younger generations about historical accounts, cultural heritage, and religious values.
As the Manipur State Museum celebrates its legacy, it remains one of the Northeast Region’s premier collection centers.
However, security concerns limit the display of rare articles as the curator highlighted the challenges faced by the museum, including limited manpower.
She maintained that it has been a tough challenge to manage the museum with just few staff, adding that it lacks Assistant Curator and Guides among others.
To rekindle interest, she suggested opening facilities like a cafeteria and an outdoor recreational area within the museum’s campus.
Mairembam’s vision for promoting the museum’s significance aligns with its 55th Foundation Day’s message.

She said that the Manipur State Museum will be poised to become a vibrant hub for cultural exploration, education, and community engagement when it is transformed.
As the Manipur State Museum looks to the future, its rich history and cultural significance remain a source of pride for the state, the curator added.
