Imphal: Voices of resentment over “inaction” by the government to end the violence in Manipur are getting louder.
Student bodies, in a joint statement, criticized the state and the central governments for their inadequate response to the ongoing violence.
The joint statement of DESAM, KSA, AIMS and SUK held the security advisor and the DGP responsible for the fresh wave of violence that hit Jiribam district.

The joint statement further accused the security advisor and the DGP of not handling the crisis in a right manner while pointing out various different statements from the authorities including Union home minister Amit Shah.
The different conflicting explanations from the concerned authorities, ranging from external aggression to an ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities showed that the crisis in the state is being mishandled, the statement alleged.
The recent ambush on the advance security team of the chief minister’s carcade highlighted the worsening law and order situation in the state, it added.

Citing reports that appeared in various media outlets regarding the security alert sounded by the chief minister’s office months ago, the student bodies alleged that it indicated a neglected attitude of handling the law and order situation on the part of the DGP and the security advisor.
“Despite the alert messages, the suspected Kuki militant carried out their offensive in Jiribam district and also attacked the advance security team of the chief minister. It revealed a significant security lapses”, the joint statement pointed out.
At the same time, the joint statement strongly reacted to the establishment of buffer zones, red zones, and lines of control and alleged that it demonstrated the government’s failure to maintain law and order.

The student bodies further pointed out the “confusions” created about the status of the Suspension of Operation (Soo) agreement which the state government and the Centre signed with the Kuki militants.
The SoO agreement period had expired on February 29 last. However, there was no news of its extension. “If the SoO is not extended, the government must take decisive action against the militants”, it asserted.
