Imphal, April 8: The imposition of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in Manipur remains a highly contentious issue, with a coalition of six student bodies from the valley vehemently opposing its continued enforcement.

In a joint press release today, the groups comprising All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF), AIMS, Democratic Students’ Association of Manipur (DESAM), SUK and Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA) argued that the law, often referred to as the “black law,” violates the fundamental human rights of the people of Manipur and fosters an atmosphere of fear and oppression.

AFSPA has been in place for decades, granting sweeping powers to the armed forces in areas declared as “Disturbed Areas.”

The law, which has been used by the central government to maintain control over regions facing unrest, has been a point of major controversy for decades, particularly in Manipur where it has remained in effect for several years.

The six student bodies have strongly criticised the impacts of AFSPA, noting its re-enforcement in various police stations across the state since its imposition.

The groups raised serious concerns over the law’s contribution to human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, forced disappearances, and torture.

Despite efforts to modify or relax its enforcement in certain regions, AFSPA remains intact in multiple districts, continuing to fuel violence and suffering.

The student bodies have reiterated their demand for the immediate repeal of the law, urging for an end to the cycle of conflict and for peace to be restored in the region.
