A combined team of Manipur police and Assam Rifles has seized 1.045 kg of brown sugar (no. 4) valued around Rs 2.90 crore in the international market. Two persons were also arrested along with the contraband drugs, the police said on Tuesday.

The police source said that the combined team of 20 Assam Rifles and police at Tengnoupal district seized the drugs during a check to a Honda Civic brand car (ASO-1AK-0013) at the motor vehicle check post at Tengnoupal along NH-102 (Imphal-Moreh) on Monday evening, around 4.20 pm.

The check to the vehicle was conducted based on specific information, police stated. The illegal drug was found concealing under the seats of the car in 80 soap cases.

The team detained the driver of the car identified as Jamthang (28) after the illegal drug was recovered from the car along with his accomplice identified as Lhuncha (26).

The police suspect the illegal drug being smuggled from Myanmar through the porous Indo-Myanmar border at Moreh for onward smuggling to other states of the country.

Two mobile handsets with three SIM cards were also seized, the police source added.
