Ukhrul, September 11: The United Naga Council (UNC) has agreed to temporarily suspended its trade embargo, effective after 6 PM today evening, after receiving written assurances from the government to open talks on two sensitive issues: the scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the construction of border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar boundary.
Sources say the decision to suspend the embargo was taken during an emergency meeting of the UNC Presidential Council held at its headquarters in Tahamzam, Senapati. The move follows several rounds of protests, memoranda, and failed negotiations.
A detailed press note will be released by the UNC later this evening.

The trade embargo was originally enforced from midnight of September 8 in Naga-inhabited districts including Senapati, Ukhrul, Chandel, Tamenglong, Kamjong, and Noney, affecting major highways (NH-2, NH-37) bringing essential supplies.
It may be mentioned that on September 10, the Manipur government formally requested the UNC to call off the embargo, referencing written assurances from the Central government that it would first consult stakeholders before proceeding with any border fencing work.
