The Manipuri Meitei Association, Bangalore (MMAB), marked the 133rd Manipur Patriots’ Day with a heartfelt tribute to the martyrs of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, an event regarded by many as India’s second war of independence. MMAB in a press release on Saturday said the “solemn occasion not only honored the bravery and sacrifice of these martyrs but also reflected on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent recognition of their legacy by naming the third highest peak in the Andamans as Mount Manipur.”

In a powerful response to the ongoing violence that has plagued Manipur for over a year, MMAB introduced the “Fields of Hope” initiative—a football-friendly event designed to promote peace and restore normalcy. Through this initiative, the association seeks to bridge divides, heal wounds, and foster unity among communities, offering hope to children and families affected by the conflict.

The event, according to MMAB is its commitment to equality and peaceful coexistence, with sports serving as a unifying force. Sri Sri Ravishankar, in a video message, praised MMAB’s efforts in connecting communities and promoting peace in Manipur and the broader Northeast region.

MLA Shri R.K. Imo, President of the Manipur Cricket Association, extended his support, stating, “Sports transcends caste and religion, promoting peace and unity among all. I hope this event will be the first of many, offering a ray of hope to everyone.”

The commemoration began with a lamp-lighting ceremony, followed by a floral tribute to the martyrs, a military band performance, and cultural displays, including patriotic songs and a Manipuri dance (Meitei Jagoi) performed by members of the Naga and Meitei communities. The “Fields of Hope” event featured players from diverse backgrounds, including participants from Tripura, Nagaland, and various communities within Manipur, such as the Naga community, Meitei Pangal, and Meitei.

Member of Parliament Dr. Agomcha Bimol Akoijam served as the Chief Guest. MMAB in the press release said the MP emphasized the importance of remembering the martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice for their homeland, stating, “This is the most unifying event, especially in these trying times when many aspire to live in peace and equality. Many simply want to return to normal lives and live with dignity.”

On behalf of MMAB and the founding members of “Fields of Hope,” MMAB also said that Maj Rajkumar Jhaljit Singh (Retd.) highlighted the initiative’s goal of uniting communities through sports. He noted that the diverse participation of teams is a testament to the event’s success and the blessings it has received. The 11 founding members are also involved in training 300 football students from violence-affected areas, with hopes that this initiative will continue to grow and bring about positive change.
