UKHRUL: Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu gave India its first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after winning the women’s 48kg weightlifting event, while Manipur’s Chanambam Rishikanta Singh added a silver in the men’s 60kg category.
Chanu, 31, lifted a Games record total of 190kg, comprising 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk. Both lifts set new Commonwealth Games records.
The gold was Chanu‘s third in a row at the Commonwealth Games, having also won the title at Gold Coast in 2018 and Birmingham in 2022.
Later in the day, Chanambam Rishikanta Singh claimed India’s second medal of the Games and its first silver after finishing runner-up in the men’s 60kg event.

The Manipuri lifter matched the Commonwealth Games record in the snatch with 121kg before lifting 143kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 264kg.
Rishikanta’s medal added to India’s strong start in weightlifting, a discipline that has consistently delivered medals for the country at the Commonwealth Games.
His performance drew congratulatory messages from across Manipur, with many describing the silver medal as a proud moment for the state.
“Another glorious chapter in Indian Weightlifting!”, prime minister Narendra Modi tweeted.
