Ukhrul: The Mao Naga community in Delhi celebrated its 52nd Freshers’ cum Annual Gathering on November 9, 2024, to honor the achievements and culture of the community. The gathering, a platform for learning, networking, and inspiration, welcomed distinguished leaders and guests who shared encouragements aimed at empowering the next generation.
Prominent figures from various sectors graced the event as Guests of Honor, including Asholi Chalai, President of the Mao Welfare Association Delhi and Joint Secretary of the National Commission for Women, Government of India; K Moses Chalai IAS, Secretary of the Inter State Council Secretariat in the Ministry of Home Affairs; and Dr. Ashiho Asosii Mao, Director of the Botanical Survey of India, Kolkata. Mrs. Koshia, Special Public Prosecutor at the District & Session Court in Senapati, also shared her personal journey, encouraging attendees to embrace growth and perseverance.

In a powerful address, Chief Guest MLA Losii Dikho emphasized the importance of time, determination, and economic empowerment. “Economic strength surpasses political influence,” Dikho declared, urging young people to pursue entrepreneurship as a means to lasting impact. He also encouraged the community to engage in sincere service, noting, “Politics should be about lifting each other up and working sincerely for the public.”
Representatives from the Mao Student Union, including former President and current Tribunal General Mariikho O’Leriina, joined Wennyei Konyak, Residents Commissioner of Nagaland House in New Delhi, defining the unity and solidarity of the community.

Following the addresses, the second session of the gathering came alive with music, entertainment, and cultural competitions. The ululation contest (makei), a traditional celebration of Mao culture, saw Ronald Pfokreni claim victory, with Mariikho Lerinah named first runner-up. Excitement heightened with the selection of Mr. Lohrii Mokukape and Miss Kajini as Mr. and Miss Freshers, respectively.
Cultural performances from talented Mao Naga artists added to the event’s memorable atmosphere, capping off an annual celebration that both honored the community’s rich heritage and looked forward to a future of collective growth and success.
