AGARTALA/UKHRUL: The Delhi Police on Friday dismissed widespread social media and many national media claims about a surge in missing girls cases in the national capital as a paid promotional campaign, warning that creating panic for monetary gains will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken against those responsible for spreading misinformation that has caused alarm among city residents.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Delhi Police stated, “After following a few leads, we discovered that the hype around the surge in missing girls in Delhi is being pushed through paid promotion. Creating panic for monetary gains won’t be tolerated, and we’ll take strict action against such individuals.”

The clarification comes after viral social media posts claiming an alarming spike in missing persons cases, particularly involving women and girls, created widespread anxiety among Delhi residents in recent days. According to reports, the coordinated misinformation campaign led many residents to panic and take extra precautions, with some changing their phone wallpapers to emergency helpline numbers and others restricting their movement after dark.

The police clarified that many missing person reports include short-term absences and temporary loss of contact, which do not necessarily indicate long-term disappearances.

Delhi Police emphasized that they follow a transparent and impartial crime reporting policy, with all complaints related to missing persons promptly registered and investigated. The force also clarified that no organized gang or criminal network has been found to be involved in cases of missing or abducted children in Delhi.

The authorities are now investigating the source of the paid promotional campaign that artificially amplified the panic, with speculation emerging that it may have been linked to marketing activities for a Bollywood film.
