Mao Students’ Union Celebrates Cultural Regale 2024

Ukhrul: The Cultural Regale 2024, a two-day celebration of Mao heritage, wrapped up successfully at Asufii Christian Institute, Punanamei Mao, on December 27 and 28. Organized by the Mao Students’ Union under the theme “Honouring Our Ancestors,” the event witnessed a turnout around 1,300 people, including delegates from 31 registered units, coming together to celebrate their rich culture and traditions.

Losii Dikho, MLA of the 48-Mao Assembly Constituency, inaugurated the event, and Father Joseph M. Thohrii, Vice Principal of St. Joseph College, Ukhrul, was the resource person. Other special guests included representatives from groups such as the Naga Students’ Federation, Mao Council, and Senapati District Students’ Association.

The program began with a welcome address by Mao Students’ Union President Pfokrehrii Matekho Pekosii. Lokho Ozho, a former president of the union, explained the theme of the event, while Khriesamhalie David Mere, President of the Angami Students’ Union, spoke about the importance of unity through culture.

In his address, MLA Losii Dikho praised the power of culture to bring people together and encouraged the youth to lead with honesty and selflessness. He also emphasized the importance of contributing meaningfully to society and family. Nenio Mao, General Secretary of the Mao Officers Union, reminded the audience that losing one’s culture means losing one’s identity.

Father Joseph M. Thohrii gave an inspiring speech, urging participants to embrace their culture in deeper ways and not just through traditional attire. He called for pride in their roots while recognizing the impact of outside influences. His closing message declared 2025 as a “Year of Hope,” encouraging everyone to aim for their goals while preserving their identity.

The event was packed with cultural competitions and performances that showcased the rich traditions of the Mao community. Highlights included folk dance, folk song, and folk tale competitions, with winners like Pudunamei Youth and Students Organisation, Tobumai Youth and Student Organisation, and Nepuni Bunio from Chowainu Village. Attendees also enjoyed an art and craft exhibition titled “Working Tools: Cultivation to Harvest,” as well as performances by The Story Weavers and Sprouting Oak Academy.

The celebrations ended on a high note with a vibrant gala night, leaving everyone with fond memories of a meaningful and joyous event.
