Chandel, September 10: The Maring Frontal Organisations on Wednesday voiced strong opposition to a reported decision by the Government of India to relocate the Kuki National Organization’s (KNO) Hermon camp from Chehlep to Samukom under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement, warning that such a move could reignite community tensions in Manipur’s border districts.

In a press release, the Maring frontal organisations described the plan as “deeply shocking, arbitrary, and unacceptable,” arguing that Samukom lies along a critical route for Nagas and other communities traveling between Machi, Kamjong, Rilram and the border town of Moreh. The route, they noted, has remained peaceful and unhindered, and the presence of an armed camp in the area would “terrorize ordinary commuters” and “create an atmosphere of fear and mistrust.”
The groups said the relocation raised doubts about New Delhi’s sincerity in handling sensitive issues affecting indigenous peoples. They insisted that any such camp should be established only in areas surrounded by Kuki villages, in order to avoid the risk of inter-community flare-ups.

Citing past incidents, including attacks on Maring villages, the burning of village gates, and assaults on civilians by armed groups, the Maring organisations warned that the proposed move to Samukom could “be a recipe for renewed tensions, endangering the fragile peace and harmony of the region.”
It further urged that the central government to “immediately reconsider and revoke this ill-conceived move,” cautioning that failure to act with “sensitivity and justice” would amount to disregarding the safety and rights of the Maring and neighboring Naga communities.
