Ukhrul, Dec 21: The World Meetei Council (WMC) Manipur Unit held a crucial meeting at Mayeng Lamjao Panthoibi Sanglenda in Kakching district to deliberate on the pressing challenges facing the state. Led by WMC President U. Kunjo Singh, the meeting was attended by senior office bearers including Vice President M. Somorjit, General Secretary Kh. Muhen, Women’s Front President U. Matouleibi, and Youth Front President A. Sajan among others.
One of the main issues discussed was the inclusion of the Meetei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. The council raised concerns over the Manipur government’s recommendation to the Centre on this matter following advocacy by Inner MP Oja Bimol in Parliament. The WMC questioned the transparency and constitutional validity of the process and urged the government to clarify its position to the public.

The council also criticized the state government’s response to recent violent incidents including the killing of eight children on December 8 and the disappearance of civilians near the Leimakhong Army Headquarters. It held the government responsible for failing to ensure safety and order, mentioning a recent affidavit by the Union Home Ministry to the Manipur High Court, which stated that responsibility for law and order lies with the state government.
Participants expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership of the Chief Minister, questioning the lack of intelligence inputs from the Home Department despite his 15 months in office. They also raised concerns about the prolonged imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the state, even as over 100,000 central forces remain deployed. Allegations of misuse of AFSPA by tribal groups, including the Chin-Kuki community, were also discussed.

The WMC emphasized the urgent need for effective leadership to address the growing insurgency and the plight of displaced and affected communities. The council criticized the central and state governments for their perceived failure to act decisively, calling for unity and collective efforts to restore peace and stability in Manipur.
In conclusion, WMC President U. Kunjo Singh urged the government to prioritize transparency and accountability, particularly on sensitive issues such as the inclusion of the Meetei in the ST list. He emphasized that the people of Manipur deserve strong leadership and effective governance to navigate the current crisis.
