This public interest litigation initially sought orders from the Court to stop illegal or irregular felling of trees in and around the Lower New Colony area, Laitumkhrah. Subsequently, the bench decided to expand the scope of the writ petition to cover the entire East Khasi Hills district and later to include all districts of the state.
By its order dated April 9, 2025, the bench had directed the State to file a report regarding action taken in terms of that order to stop the illegal felling of trees.
