Ukhrul, June 9: Meghalaya Police on Monday announced the arrest of the wife of Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore-based man who was allegedly murdered during their honeymoon in the state. DGP I. Nongrang said that Sonam Raghuvanshi surrendered under pressure before the police in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur, while three other assailants were arrested in raids.

The tourist couple from Indore, Madhya Pradesh went missing on May 23.

After an eight-day search, the highly decomposed body of Raja Raghuvanshi, who went missing with his wife while on a honeymoon to Sohra, was recovered from a deep gorge on June 2, 2025, at Weisawdong falls, after it was spotted by a police drone. The police drone spotted the dead body in the deep gorge below the Weisawdong Parking Lot at Riat Arliang at 11.48 am.

Adding to the mystery, the wife, in the initial stage of search and rescue was believed to have been deceased, as Sonam’s body was not found. The intense search party involved Police, SDRF, SOT and the West Jaintia Hills District Adventure Mountaineering Club.

Vipin brother of the late Raja Raghuvanshi also claimed it was highly unlikely that his brother and sister-in-law committed suicide. “The area where his body was recovered has a proper boundary. It’s not easy to fall accidentally, let alone both of them,” he had said demanding a CBI probe. Investigators allege the wife hired a group of contract killers to carry out the crime.

The wife had been missing for nearly two weeks and is accused of orchestrating her husband’s murder just days after their wedding in Madhya Pradesh.

Meghalaya Police had registered a murder case, and a special investigation team (SIT) was formed to investigate the case.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, took to X and said the arrest of Sonam and three within seven days is a major breakthrough achieved by the Meghalaya Police in the Raja murder case
“3 assailants who are from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested, female has surrendered and operation still on to catch 1 more assailant .. well done.” #meghalayapolice, Conrad K Sangma wrote.
