Meghalaya: Landslide leaves 4 dead in West Jiantia Hills

Shillong: Four persons died in a landslide early today at Pynthor Langtein village under Thadalskein block in West Jaintia Hills.

A statement issued by the government today said that the four people who lost their lives in the incident include the father, the mother and their two children.

The landslide, which was triggered by incessant rain, partially buried the victims’ houses in mud.

Their bodies have been retrieved and the necessary legal formalities will be observed.

The government has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 16 lakh to the next of kin of the victims.

“Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills district has been instructed to release ex gratia funds @ Rs 4 lakh per person to the next of kin immediately,” the statement said while adding that the Block Development Officer, Thadlaskein C&RD Block has been directed to render any other immediate assistance.
