UT News Service | Shillong, August 10: Meghalaya reported 53 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Monday, with total number of active cases to 611.

Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said that, out of the 53 new cases of COVID-19 detected, 39 are from West Garo Hills district, 12 from East Khasi Hills district and 2 from Ri Bhoi district. He also said as many as 29 Border Security Force (BSF) troopers and 10 civilians including 9 returnees and a contact of a positive case from North Garo Hills have contracted the virus in West Garo Hills.

Dr War said the 12 cases in East Khasi Hills include 2 staff nurses and a patient attendant at the NEIGRIHMS hospital, a patient attendant at the Shillong Civil Hospital, a tourist taxi driver, 4 returnees, 1 Armed Force and 2 high risk contacts of a positive case.

In Ri Bhoi, a patient at the Nongpoh Civil Hospital and an Armed Force personnel were also tested positive for the virus.

Dr War informed that the tourist taxi driver was engaged by the Transport department for picking and dropping of people from Guwahati adding he is now kept at the corona care centre.

He further informed that eight more patients have also recovered from the infection on Monday, taking the total recoveries in the state to 498. The new recovered cases include 3 civilians from East Khasi Hills, 4 others and a BSF jawan in West Garo Hills.

Out of the 611 active cases in the state, Dr War said East Khasi Hills has 428 cases which include 268 civilians, 91 BSF and 69 Armed Forces personnel.

Meanwhile, as of Monday, a total of 41,734 samples have been sent for testing of which 39,785 were found to be negative while test results of 834 are awaited. There are 26,766 entrants from outside the state till date.

Meanwhile, the state has so far registered a total of 1,115 COVID-19 cases and 6 lives have been lost to the dreaded disease.
