Meitei Alliance Demands Justice for Naga Civilian, Action Against Killers

UKHRUL: The Meitei Alliance has condemned the recent killings and attacks on villages in Manipur, urging the Centre, the state government and security agencies to ensure civilian protection, investigate security lapses and bring those responsible to justice.

Meitei Alliance, on Tuesday, expressed concern over reported attacks in Kamjong, Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts, particularly in Liangmai and Tangkhul Naga areas. It also alleged the involvement of heavily armed militants of the Myanmar-based Kuki National Army–Burma (KNA-B) in cross-border attacks.

The Meitei Alliance specifically condemned the reported beheading of Naga civilian Ajinbou Ringkangmai, whose severed head it said remained unaccounted for. It demanded the recovery of his remains and the identification, arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

Questioning the continued attacks despite the presence of Central and state security forces, the alliance said civilians continued to face violence and destruction of homes and livelihoods more than three years after the conflict in Manipur began on May 3, 2023.

The statement also raised concerns over the conditions of internally displaced persons (IDPs), alleging that tens of thousands continued to live in overcrowded relief camps without certainty about their future.

It then criticised political parties for what it described as a growing focus on electoral calculations ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections, arguing that civilian safety, rehabilitation and the restoration of peace should take priority over political interests.

The Meitei Alliance called on the governments at the Centre and in Manipur to prevent further attacks, investigate security failures, protect vulnerable communities and facilitate the safe and dignified return of displaced people to their homes.

It also appealed to political parties, elected representatives and aspiring leaders to prioritise the lives and dignity of Manipur’s people over political ambitions.

“Manipur does not need another round of political promises while its people are being killed and displaced,” the statement said, calling for immediate action, accountability, justice and lasting peace.
