UKHRUL: The Meitei Heritage Society (MHS) on Tuesday alleged that Meitei settlements at Torbung in Bishnupur district came under firing by suspected Chin-Kuki militants, and urged the government to take immediate action against armed groups operating in the area.
In a press release issued from New Delhi, the organisation said the incident occurred a day after Meitei internally displaced persons (IDPs) had returned to the Torbung area, which lies close to the Churachandpur district boundary. The society claimed the firing was intended to intimidate families who had begun resettling after months of displacement.

The MHS said such incidents could derail ongoing efforts to restore normalcy and facilitate the return of displaced people to their homes. It alleged that armed groups were deliberately targeting civilian areas to prolong the crisis in Manipur.
The society also criticised certain Chin-Kuki civil society organisations for opposing the resettlement of IDPs, stating that such opposition went against the interests of displaced families seeking to return.
Calling on both the Central and State governments to intervene, the MHS said authorities must ensure the safety of civilians and take firm steps to curb militant activities. It further demanded action to dismantle alleged links between armed groups, political elements, and affiliated organisations to prevent further violence.
