Member of Fortius Cup 2023 winner dies in a tragic accident at Kamjong

Ukhrul: Changwung Shimrah, a 22-year-old athlete met with an unfortunate end in an accident on Saturday at Kamjong, cutting short the life of a vibrant young talent, leaving the local community in a state of shock and grief.

Changwung Shimrah was returning from winning the Fortius Cup, a local tournament, where he showcased his skills as a member of the Grihang Club. The local tournament had provided an opportunity for talented players from the region to exhibit their prowess in the football field. However, the joy of his participation quickly turned into sorrow as the news of his tragic accident spread through the community.

Professionally, Changwung had last represented the Youth Organizing Sporting Club (YOSC), Khurai in the prestigious Shirui Lily Cup 2023, where his team secured the impressive position of 1st runner-up. The talented striker had shown great promise throughout his career, initially starting out with the Yarkhok Football Club in 2019.

According to sources, Changwung Shimrah’s life could have been saved if immediate medical attention had been available. Unfortunately, at the time of the accident, the District Hospital in Kamjong had no doctors on duty, leaving him waiting for over an hour for crucial medical assistance. Later he was asked to be taken to Imphal but due to the lack of timely treatment led tragically to his demise at Finch Corner.

The community, along with fellow football enthusiasts, is deeply saddened by the loss of Changwung Shimrah. His passion for the sport, combined with his promising skills, had endeared him to many. As news of his untimely death circulated, tributes and condolences poured in from across the region.

The memory of Changwung Shimrah will forever be cherished by those who knew him, both on and off the football field, a fellow player said.

As his loved ones mourn his loss, the entire community stands united in grief, remembering the bright young star whose life was cut short in such a tragic manner.

“We are heartbroken with the news of the passing away of The Dream Team FC player Changwung Shimrah”, expressed Jishnu Mitra Foundation and The Sports Company.

Hoping that their thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time “Chang, we will always miss you”, they added.

The Youth Organisation Sporting Club (YOSC), Khurai has also condoled the untimely demise of Changwung Shimrah. The club and the State lost a promising player, said YOSC in the condolence note.
