MHRC seeks action in transgender assault case

UKHRUL: Usham Deepika Chanu, a transgender woman from Manipur, was allegedly assaulted by members of her own family. Despite approaching the Imphal Police Station on November 12, no FIR was registered, no statement taken, and no procedural action initiated.

A subsequent representation submitted to the Superintendent of Police on November 19 also went unanswered.

Hearing the matter, Manipur Human Rights Commission chairperson K. Khagendra Singh directed the SP to instruct the officer-in-charge of Imphal Police Station to act on the complaint and to submit a compliance report by December 22.
