Protests against ST grant turns violent in Assam

UKHRUL: Protests against the Assam government’s move to grant ST status to six communities — Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Koch-Rajbongshi and the Tea Tribe — turned violent on Saturday (November 29).

Student demonstrators vandalised the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) secretariat in Kokrajhar, damaging the secretariat gate and vandalising the furniture inside.

Protestors argue that extending ST status to these communities would dilute the rights of the Bodos and weaken their political, educational and economic safeguards.

Assam has witnessed parallel agitations over the past two months, with the six communities demanding ST status and existing ST groups mobilising in opposition.
