UKHRUL: Sarbananda Sonowal, Union minister of ports, shipping and waterways announced three inland waterway projects in Mizoram on the Tlawng and Chhimtuipui river.
The projects aim to unveil economic potential through cost-effective and faster transport in the region—improving trade, tourism and connectivity.
Sonowal stated that studies on Hydrographic (measuring and mapping of physical features of water bodies for safe navigation) and techno-economic feasibility from Khamrang (Mizoram) to Gharmura (Assam) stretch of the Tlawng river will be undertaken at Rs 89 lakhs.
He also mentioned that Rs 1.42 crore on hydrographic surveys and developmental detailed project reports on Chhimtuipui river has been submitted.

Stage-1 construction for terminals and jetties in southern Mizoram’s Lunglei district at an estimate of Rs 9.82 crore is underway Sonowal added.
This announcement was made on the sidelines of India Maritime Week.
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Inland Waterways Authority of India, the Assam government and private companies for the development of inland waterways project in the region.
The minister also highlighted the strategic importance of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project. It aims to connect Northeast with Myanmar and international trade routes.
This positions Mizoram as an intersection for cross-border movement.
