UKHRUL: Ukhrul Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Ram Muivah has written to the Chief Minister, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, seeking urgent intervention regarding the reported standoff between Tangkhul Naga women and Assam Rifles personnel at New Haven, Shokavao village, and Finch Corner, all under Shangshak. In the letter, the MLA demands several measures, including the immediate relocation of Assam Rifles from New Haven to the TM Kasom ambush site and a judicial enquiry into the baton charge and firing by the Assam Rifles.

In the letter made available to the media, the MLA stated that 22 unarmed Naga women were assaulted by the Assam Rifles in standoffs at New Haven and Finch Corner on June 8 with batons and firing, citing media reports. The assault resulted in seriously injuring 22 unarmed women and M Kasar, President of the Katho Student Organization.

Further, he stated that it was reported that the womenfolk demanded the withdrawal of the Assam Rifles post from New Haven, which was set up without prior permission of the village authority in violation of the relevant provision of the Manipur (Village Authorities in Hill Areas) Act, 1956. They also demanded that the Assam Rifles should be posted in TM Kasom, where 3 ambushes have taken place, instead of New Haven, which is at least 5 km away from the ambush site.

MLA Ram Muivah also highlighted that the Kuki terrorists had carried out an inhuman ambush on the innocent passengers and shot dead 2 innocent Tangkhul civilians on 18th April, 2026, followed by an ambush on the police OC of Chingai PS, besides killing a driver of an FCI truck from Howrah, West Bengal, on the same spot. “The ambush site is in a narrow gorge of the Thoubal River, located between TM Kasom and Litan, and is extremely vulnerable. There has been consistent demand to post armed forces on either the eastern or western bank of the Thoubal River, which should have been the priority instead of New Haven,” he further stated.

Highlighting this, the MLA urgently requested the CM’s personal intervention to relocate the Assam Rifles from New Haven to the TM Kasom ambush site at the earliest possible time and to institute a judicial inquiry into the firing and baton charge by AR personnel on the unarmed womenfolk and student leader, M Kasar.
