Imphal: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the 7th death anniversary of former Chief Minister Rishang Keishing on Thursday at Congress Bhawan in Imphal. The event was marked by tributes from Congress workers and senior leaders, including MPCC President K. Meghachandra and CWC Member Gaikhangam, who paid floral homage to the late leader’s portrait, celebrating his enduring contributions to the state.
During the commemoration, Congress Legislative Party (CLP) Leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi highlighted the significance of Rishang Keishing’s advocacy for peaceful coexistence. He urged the public and leaders to uphold and pass on Keishing’s ideologies to future generations, emphasizing the need to sustain efforts to maintain Manipur’s integrity.
In a sharp critique of the current government, Ibobi blamed the ruling administration for the ongoing crisis in Manipur, pointing to what he described as a failure of responsible governance that has deepened the conflict between the Kuki and Meitei communities. He expressed concern over the unprecedented violence, noting that it has led to a complete division between the two communities, with the Meitei confined to the valley and the Kuki to the hills, unable to cross into each other’s regions.

Ibobi also addressed the recent withdrawal of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the Indo-Myanmar border, criticizing the lack of a bilateral agreement on the matter and highlighting Myanmar’s silence on the issue. Furthermore, he condemned the central government for its inaction, accusing it of being a “mere spectator” as the crisis in Manipur continues without resolution.
Rishang Keishing, a towering figure in Manipur’s political landscape, was one of the first MPs elected in 1952 and later served as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament in 2002. His legacy of dedicated service to the people of Manipur remains a source of inspiration, as the Congress Party and the state continue to honor his memory.
