Imphal, Oct 12: Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has praised the Central Government’s GST reforms, calling them a major step toward strengthening Manipur’s local economy and improving the livelihoods of artisans, farmers, and small entrepreneurs.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Biren Singh wrote that the GST reforms will provide a strong boost to Manipur’s economy through the reduction of GST to 5 percent on handloom, handicrafts, processed food, coffee, bamboo, and dairy products.

“This initiative will directly benefit over 9 lakh people, including our dedicated weavers, artisans, farmers, and entrepreneurs, strengthening sustainable livelihood, enhancing eco-tourism and the overall economy of the state. Thank you Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri @narendramodi ji for this initiative,” he stated.

The new GST structure, which came into effect this month, is designed to reduce tax pressure on traditional and small-scale industries that form the backbone of Manipur’s economy. Economic experts say the reform will encourage production, affordability, and competitiveness while opening up new opportunities for rural communities.

A recent report titled “GST Reforms 2025: How Manipur’s Economy Will Gain Across Sectors” highlights that nearly 2.5 lakh weavers, 1.2 lakh artisans, and 1.5 lakh food processing workers will directly benefit from the lower tax rate. Additionally, over 1 lakh dairy farmers and 10,000 coffee growers across Ukhrul, Senapati, and Chandel districts are expected to see improved profits and market reach.

The report also underlines how the reforms can help preserve traditional crafts, promote sustainable farming, and create more job opportunities in the state’s rural and hill regions.

Observers say the reform aligns with the Central Government’s larger vision for “Vocal for Local” and self-reliant growth in the Northeastern region, while positioning Manipur’s handloom and handicraft sectors for greater national and international recognition.
