Ukhrul, October 11: The Tangkhul community is preparing to welcome Thuingaleng Muivah, Ato Kilonser of the NSCN/GPRN, who is set to return to his native village, Somdal, after more than five decades.
Community leaders from the four Tangkhul regions — Ato (North), Aze (South), Zingsho (East), and Zingtun (West) — have expressed their joy and anticipation ahead of Muivah’s visit.

Wungpam L. Shimray, Chairman of Ato Longphang, voiced the sentiments shared by thousands across the region, stating, “Avakharar, who has long suffered for his people, bearing every struggle, is finally returning to his birthplace after 50 years. We rejoice and give thanks to Almighty God for opening a great threshold for us Nagas.”
From the western region, Zingtun Longphang Chairman Epchan Khapai called on the people to emphasize prayer and peace, saying, “Let us all pray for his safe return to his hometown, that no natural calamity or disturbance may hinder his journey.”
Representing the eastern region, AS Nathan, Chairman of Zingsho Longphang, highlighted the devotion of the people, remarking, “Having served the Naga nation for many years, our leader’s return is eagerly awaited by the Tangkhul tribe, young and old alike. People from the East are praying for his safe arrival.”
Adding voices from the South, Sophayo Siro, a senior member of Aze Longphang, speaking on behalf of the chairman, shared, “The entire South Tangkhul community, women’s groups, youth, church members, and villagers, are preparing to welcome our Ato Kilonser’s momentous return with great jubilation.”

Born in 1934 at Somdal village in Ukhrul district, Thuingaleng Muivah is among the most prominent figures of the Naga political movement and has played a key role in decades of Indo-Naga peace negotiations.
In anticipation of his visit, preparations are underway across the district, with village authorities, youth and student organisations, churches, and civil bodies coordinating reception programmes. Community prayer services, cultural rehearsals, and public gatherings are being held to mark the occasion.
At Somdal, local residents are organising cultural performances and community feasts to commemorate what many describe as a significant homecoming for one of the most respected leaders from the region.
