UKHRUL: Several Naga organizations have expressed their support for Ambrose D. Kamai, also known as Ambrose Freebird, following the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against him. The FIR was reportedly filed in connection with three Facebook posts discussing Naga rights, political matters, history, and the security of the Naga Zeliangrong community, according to the Zeliangrong Youth Front Nagaland (ZYFN).
Organizations such as the ZYFN, Naga People’s Network Forum (NPNF), Rongmei Naga Council Manipur (RNCM), and the Pongringlong Youth Club emphasized that the registration of an FIR does not equate to a conviction. They stated that Ambrose should not be prematurely labeled or treated as a convicted criminal before the conclusion of due process as stipulated by law.
The groups also highlighted that Ambrose is a musician, educator, and an ordinary citizen who has consistently voiced his opinions and concerns regarding the history, rights, dignity, security, and political aspirations of the Naga people.
The ZYFN firmly believes that peaceful advocacy and the expression of genuine concerns about Naga history, rights, dignity, security, and political aspirations should not be criminalized, provided these expressions remain within legal boundaries. They also asserted that they will not remain silent or tolerate the wrongful victimization, unfair targeting, or unjust branding of any member of the Zeliangrong community. At a time when the entire Zeliangrong Naga community is mourning and seeking justice, it is crucial that the concerns and rights of their people are addressed with fairness and sensitivity.
The NPNF, in expressing its solidarity, stated that Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression, subject to reasonable restrictions under Article 19(2). They noted that political criticism and advocacy for a community’s rights, identity, and security should not be automatically deemed criminal. However, they acknowledged that freedom of expression does not protect incitement to violence. The organization argued that questioning attacks on villages, the lack of arrests for perpetrators, or the state’s failure to protect its citizens represents a legitimate democratic grievance, unless such expressions cross a clearly defined legal threshold. The NPNF affirmed its support for Ambrose and his exercise of freedom of expression within the bounds of the law.

The Pongringlong Youth Club emphasized that Ambrose has never sought to provoke communal violence, encourage criminal acts, or incite hatred against any community. Instead, he has consistently advocated for peaceful dialogue, negotiation, mutual understanding, and coexistence among communities, while steadfastly asserting the history, dignity, rights, and political aspirations of the Naga people.
They expressed gratitude to the Global Naga Forum, the Naga Lawyers Association, and other concerned organizations and leaders for their timely intervention and assistance.
The RNCM described the incident as an act of intimidation by law enforcement aimed at silencing the truth and undermining the dignity and integrity of a specific community. They urged all parties involved to withdraw the accusations in the interest of the people and for a better, more secure future.
