Senapati, Sept 27: In a strong statement issued today, the Naga Women’s Union (NWU) has called for the immediate removal of unauthorized checkpoints and barriers that have been established along highways in Manipur since May 3, 2023. These checkpoints were set up amid escalating tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities and have caused significant disruptions for civilians.
The NWU highlighted that these unauthorized installations pose severe inconveniences to commuters, subjecting them to harassment, intimidation, and unnecessary delays. Travelers have reported being forced to provide identification, vehicle details, and enduring questioning in unfamiliar languages, leading to considerable mental distress.
Moreover, the Union pointed out that these checkpoints are not only a violation of civil rights but also detrimental to students’ education, as delays often result in late arrivals to school. The environment of fear created by armed groups near these checkpoints is increasingly untenable, particularly for women and children.

The NWU expressed concern over the close proximity of military personnel to armed groups, urging security forces to maintain professionalism and adhere to the law. The presence of armed individuals in public spaces fosters an atmosphere of intimidation that is unacceptable in a civilized society.
As the Naga community has shown remarkable resilience throughout the ongoing conflict, the NWU stressed that both Meitei and Kuki groups must recognize the sentiments of their neighbors and engage in meaningful dialogue to restore peace.

The organization is demanding immediate action from the authorities to dismantle the unauthorized barriers and facilitate safe travel for all citizens, emphasizing that the time for resolution is now.
