KOHIMA: The newly upgraded Nagabazar Sub-Centre was inaugurated on Wednesday by N. Leamnyei Konyak in the presence of Ward No. 4 Councillor Zeneivonuo Nakhro, Nagabazar Panchayat members, health officials, community leaders and residents.
Addressing the gathering, Konyak described the inauguration as a major step towards strengthening accessible and affordable healthcare services at the grassroots level. He noted that the sub-centre, originally established in 1987, had served the community for nearly four decades without major infrastructural upgrades. He informed that the upgraded facility was made possible through funding support under the 15th Finance Commission Health Grants (2021–2022), along with contributions from the Ward Panchayat, Ward Councillor and the Kohima Municipal Council.
Konyak stated that the centre is currently staffed by eight healthcare professionals and will provide twelve essential healthcare service packages, including maternal and child healthcare, adolescent health services, management of communicable and non-communicable diseases, elderly and palliative care, and emergency medical services.
He further announced that 106 essential medicines and 12 diagnostic services would be made available under the Government of India’s Free Drug Service initiative.

Highlighting future prospects, Konyak said the sub-centre could eventually be upgraded into a Primary Health Centre (PHC) or Community Health Centre (CHC), subject to the availability of sufficient land for expansion. Delivering the keynote address, Councillor Zeneivonuo Nakhro termed the occasion a “historic moment” for the community and said the facility would significantly improve access to timely and affordable healthcare services for residents.
She noted that the centre would provide essential services such as emergency care, treatment for minor illnesses and injuries, blood pressure screening, diabetes testing, and maternal and child healthcare. Nakhro also urged residents to take ownership of the facility and actively utilise its services for the betterment of community health. The programme was chaired by Secretary, Nagabazar Panchayat, Neiba Bio, while Pastor Ruokuowhelie Pienyii of Upper Nagabazar Baptist Church pronounced the invocation. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Chairman, Nagabazar Panchayat, Thinuowhelhou Kire.
