Kohima: Marking six decades since its establishment, the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) celebrated its 60th anniversary under the theme “Embracing Innovation and Celebrating Legacy” at the Assembly Secretariat Complex. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio emphasized the unique and profound connection between the formation of the Nagaland state and the Naga political issue. Reflecting on the Assembly’s role, Rio highlighted that since attaining statehood, every session has underscored the importance of peace, unity, and inclusive negotiations for the Naga cause, with resolutions consistently passed to support peaceful outcomes.

Former Chief Minister Dr. S.C. Jamir delivered a speech titled “Down Memory Lane,” reflecting on his journey within the Assembly, where he grew as a public figure. Jamir noted the Assembly as a cradle of his political career and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Naga people. He recounted the historical struggles leading to statehood, the sacrifices made by the people of Nagaland, and highlighted Nagaland’s creation through a unique political agreement, which distinguished its path within India. Jamir called upon members to uphold the Naga values of courage and honesty in representing the interests of the state and its people.
Speaker Sharingain Longkumer in his address emphasized the Assembly’s enduring role in representing Nagaland’s diverse communities since its inception in 1964. He acknowledged that significant milestones, including the recent election of two female legislators, reflect the Assembly’s progress toward inclusive representation.

Longkumer urged members to honor the past while embracing future challenges, especially through innovative approaches that support transparent and responsive governance. He also praised the Assembly for fostering critical debates and legislative actions that have guided Nagaland’s development.
Governor La. Ganesan, speaking at the event, noted that the Assembly represents not only a governing institution but also a symbol of unity and democratic values for the people of Nagaland. He stressed the importance of adapting to an evolving world by integrating new ideas and technologies to enhance the Assembly’s effectiveness. Ganesan lauded the Assembly’s 60-year legacy as a pillar of governance and encouraged members to uphold these principles to ensure a prosperous future for Nagaland. Member of Parliament Supongmeren Jamir also recognized the anniversary as a testament to Nagaland’s unity, resilience, and commitment to peace and development, while urging continued dedication to the welfare of the people.
