NEHU Chemistry Dept Opens Golden Jubilee Conference on Chemical Sciences

Shillong, September 24: The Department of Chemistry, North Eastern Hills University (NEHU), Shillong, inaugurated a three-day International Conference on “Advances in Chemical Sciences – II (ACS – II)” today as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the department, scheduled from September 24 to 26, 2025. The conference is being attended by 150 participants and 30 notable experts from both national and international institutions.

The opening ceremony took place today and was graced by Prof. S Umdor, Pro-Vice Chancellor of NEHU, Prof. H Ila as Guest of Honour, and Prof. R B King from the University of Georgia as the special guest and keynote speaker.
The event commenced with the national anthem and the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the guests. Prof. G Bez welcomed the chief guest and participants, expressing gratitude for their presence.

Prof. A K Chandra, Dean of the School of Physical Sciences at NEHU, also addressed the gathering, offering insights into the conference and welcoming all attendees. Prof. S Umdor, the chief guest, expressed happiness in being part of the event and praised the department for its efforts in organizing the conference. He emphasized that chemistry is a catalyst for human advancement and stated that the shift to green evolution would not have been possible without it.

Prof. H Ila, former faculty member of the Department of Chemistry, NEHU, delivered an extensive presentation reflecting on her memories and experiences with the department. The inaugural programme concluded with a vote of thanks from Prof. R L Nongkhlaw, the Conference Convenor, who appreciated the dignitaries, participants, and the organizing committee.

The conference began with a keynote lecture by Prof. R B King on the topic “Certain Uncommon Forms of Aromaticity in Inorganic and Organometallic Compounds.” He discussed the structure of the topic along with the concept of aromaticity, its historical background, graph theory, and Huckel theory.
