New species still being discovered: Nagaland govt

Kohima: The Nagaland government has told the Global Fisheries Conference that new species are still being discovered in rivers in Nagaland which need to be further researched and more investment is needed to identify more ornamental fishes.

Advisor of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Government of Nagaland, A Panjung Jamir, representing the state participated in the Global Fisheries Conference India 2023 at Gujarat Science City, Ahmedabad, on November 21 and 22, 2023.

The Nagaland government representative also participated in the International Round Table which was attended by representatives from different countries including ambassadors. Jamir expressed that Nagaland being a hilly state with beautiful rivers, is blessed in ornamental and cold-water fisheries.

He stated that in Nagaland, new species are still being discovered in the rivers which need to be further researched and more investment is needed to identify more ornamental fishes.

In the cold water fisheries sector, Jamir emphasized that Nagaland has abundant cold water fishes like mahseer etc. which needs further investment to boost the production of cold water fishes.

The round table meeting concluded with an assurance to further look into the investment venture in the state. Jamir was accompanied by Deputy Director, Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Dr Rongsenkumzuk.
