KOHIMA: A delegation of the Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA), led by President Vilanuo Angela Yhome, called on the Governor of Nagaland, Nand Kishore Yadav, at Lok Bhavan, Kohima, on Wednesday, seeking urgent intervention in a series of cases involving violence against women and unresolved criminal investigations in the state.
The delegation comprised Vice President Sawmi Leyri, Advisors Sano Vamuzo, Abeni TCK, and Prof. Rosemary Dzüvichü. During the meeting, the NMA highlighted several cases that have generated public concern and called for immediate action to ensure justice for victims.
One of the key issues raised was the recent sexual violence case involving a minor girl in Dimapur, where three accused persons have been arrested. The NMA stressed the need for a thorough and impartial investigation, timely justice for the victim, and adequate rehabilitation measures.
The delegation also drew attention to multiple allegations of sexual harassment against senior IAS officer Reny Wilfred. The NMA expressed concern over the prolonged delay in action, stating that several complainants have suffered further victimization, including the loss of employment after their contractual services were not renewed. The association noted that many of the affected women have faced significant hardships while pursuing justice. It further questioned how an officer facing an ongoing rape trial in Noklak and multiple workplace harassment allegations continues to hold influence and allegedly intimidate victims. The NMA also condemned the filing of cases against members of the Nagaland State Women Commission, describing it as unacceptable.

The association further raised concerns over several unresolved murder cases, including the killing of Pimla, a mother whose case remains unsolved despite forensic examinations, and the murder of college student Vihozonuo Zao in Kohima, a case that triggered widespread public protests. The NMA alleged that forensic evidence in these cases appeared to have been overlooked and urged the Governor to ensure a fair and transparent investigation.
Another issue highlighted was the killing of six Naga civilian hostages in the Khonsakhul area, allegedly by armed Kuki militants. Describing the incident as barbaric and inhumane, the NMA appealed to the Governor and the President of India to facilitate the arrest of those responsible and ensure that they are brought to justice under the law.
The delegation also revisited the case involving death threats issued against one of its advisors and several Naga women who had advocated for women’s reservation. According to the NMA, the matter has seen little progress, with the accused reportedly being granted bail shortly after the incident. The association stated that the lack of meaningful action reflects serious shortcomings in the investigative process.

Concluding the meeting, the NMA urged the Governor to take immediate cognizance of these cases and ensure that justice is delivered without further delay. In response, Governor Nand Kishore Yadav assured the delegation that he would look into the matters raised and examine the concerns presented by the association.
The meeting underscored the growing concern among civil society organizations over violence against women, delayed investigations, and unresolved criminal cases in Nagaland, with the NMA reiterating its commitment to seeking justice and accountability for victims and their families.
