Normal Life Halted in Protest Against Annexation of Manipur in 1949

Imphal: Normal life in Imphal and other valley districts of Manipur came to a standstill today in response to a total shutdown called by various underground groups.

The shutdown, which began at dawn and continued till dusk, was a mark of protest against the “annexation of Manipur” by the Union of India on October 15, 1949.

Major markets, oil pumps, banks, educational institutions and public transportation services remained closed, with only a few private vehicles plying on the roads. Records of low attendance in government offices were also reported today.

However, flight services remained unaffected during the total shutdown.

Notably, CorCom (Coordinating committee), which is a conglomerate of various proscribed underground organizations, SOREPA and other outfits called the total shutdown from dawn to dusk in protest.
