SHILLONG: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has called for ‘black day’ observation in all seven states of the North East on December 11 as a mark of opposing the centre’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019.

In a statement issued today, the NESO reminded the people of the whole of the North East that on December 11, 2019, despite the relentless opposition of the indigenous peoples against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019, the Government of India did not pay heed and it finally, through the Rajya Sabha, passed the “draconian law” which is known as the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019.

“NESO has declared that December 11 will always be remembered as a Black Day for the whole of the North East. So, in continuation of this observation of this Black Day, NESO has decided that there will be a display of black flags and black banners in all the important places of all the seven states today,” it said.

“This observation is to give a message to the Government of India that we are against this Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 and also, at the same time, to remind our people and our posterior of yet another political injustice that the Government of India perpetrated against the indigenous peoples of the North East,” the organization added.

The organisation appealed to the people of the North East to support the observation and continue fighting for their rights. “So NESO calls upon all the people of the North East to support this observation and, at the same time, to keep on fighting for the just cause which is our God-given right,” the statement added.
